Internet Safety

The EUHSD is committed to the development of healthy teens. We all know media plays an important part in the lives of our youth.  Common Sense Media is a resource trusted by parents and educators which makes media recommendations that makes technology safer and healthier for all kids.  Please consider reviewing these articles on how parents/guardians can discuss internet safety with their teens. EUHSD Social Media Policy

The Governing Board supports the use of online social media to facilitate district programs, departments and school sites in building a more successful parent, community, student and employee network. “Social Media” includes the various online technology tools that enable people to communicate easily over the internet to share information and resources. Social media can include text, audio, video, images, podcasts, and other multimedia communications. These websites not only provide information, but allows for interaction during this informational exchange through user-generated content. For Students: Students are permitted to use social media at school as long as it is school related. We encourage students to check their school’s Facebook page, their teacher’s class page and groups on Facebook, and school related Twitter feeds. As always, your teacher will determine the appropriate time during class to use any technology. It is also very important that students keep safe, smart and be responsible digital citizens. Students in the Escondido Union High School District will learn curriculum from CommonSenseMedia.org:

  • Grade 9: Teen Voices: Oversharing and Your Digital Footprint (Digital Footprint & Identity). Students hear what other teens have to say about sharing on social media, then think critically about the decisions they're making any time they post something online about themselves or others.
  • Grade 10: Teen Voices: Who Are You on Social Media? (Digital Footprint & Identity). Students hear teens reflect on how they decide to represent themselves in the digital world, reflecting on whether they represent the self they're aiming to be.
  • Grade 11: Is the Internet Making You Meaner? From KQED Education (Cyberbullying, Digital Drama & Hate Speech). Students consider whether and how people might be meaner online than they in person, and explore what causes online disinhibition.
  • Grade 12: Screen Time: How Much Is Too Much? From KQED Education (Media Balance & Well-Being) Is screen time good or bad for us? Students explore what the scientific research says about screen time, and consider that it's not just about the time spent but the quality of the time.

A good rule of thumb would be if you would not bring it to a college admissions interview, do not post it online! The Board Policy for students regarding social media use at school can be found here
